Devil You Know - The Beauty Of Destruction (2014)
Devil You Know is the intersection of three undeniable talents from the world of heavy music.
Howard Jones: the former Killswitch Engage and Blood Has Been Shed frontman, who garnered two gold records and a grammy nomination during his decade-long tenure with the Massachusetts band. Francesco Artusato: celebrated solo artist and guitarist with The Francesco Artusato Project and All Shall Perish. And John Sankey: drummer for the Australian band Devolved, who has also worked with Fear Factory and Divine Heresy. The sum total of the three has come together as Devil You Know yielding a sound as singular as it is unforgettable.
Devil You Know was born out of Artusato and SankeyÂ?s creative quest to stretch beyond their extreme metal backgrounds. The two had written over a dozen songs before even attempting to lock down a singer. Â?We were unsure if Howard would be interested,Â? says Sankey.Â? Yet, when Killswitch EngageÂ?s former frontman received the material, a creative ideal began to solidify.
Finally connecting in Los Angeles during the last months of 2012, a highly distinctive sound began to become apparent. Â?It turned from bare-bones musical ideas into something that surpassed any of our expectationsÂ? says Jones. Â?It went from something we thought was going to be a fun, heavy project into something very real.Â? It was during a recording session at the start of 2013 with producer and former Machine Head guitarist Logan Mader (Gojira, Five Finger Death Punch) that Devil You KnowÂ?s ideas began to alchemize into something none of the bands members would ever expect. Â?It became a departure from what IÂ?m known for,Â? says Artusato. Â?I wasnÂ?t focusing on technical guitar parts (even though I still love that aspect of writing) but simply on writing what felt best for each individual song.Â?
Â?World class vocalists like Howard Jones are the rarest commodity in metal music these days,Â? says Nuclear Blast EntertainmentÂ?s Monte Conner, whose recent NBE signings include European superstars Within Temptation as well as the hotly contested inking of Machine Head. Â?Howard has a tonality and richness to his voice that very few singers have. The bandÂ?s initial demos got me very excited but sometimes you strike gold. Devil You Know just made an incredible record that is going to surpass all expectations. The vocals are everything fans have come to expect from Howard but at the same time there is a depth, dimension and variety to his singing that shows incredible growth and elevates him in every way. Add to that world-class musical talents like Francesco Artusato and John Sankey both as players and songwriters. This is ground zero of something really exciting!Â?.
Â?I had worked with Monte before I left Killswitch and have long known and respected him, says Jones of the former Roadrunner Records A&R chief. Â?He has a vision for both music and business that is second to none and made it an easy choice when it came to signing to the label. Monte and the Nuclear Blast staff understand who we are, what we have individually accomplished and where we are going as a band.Â?
While the finishing touches are being put on Devil You KnowÂ?s debut album, the writing and recording process: Â?Was surprisingly easy,Â? states Artusato. Â?When we get together it just works.Â? The band is also quick to sum up the studio vibe with producer Mader as: Â?Intensely creative,Â? says Sankey. Â?Logan definitely helped us realize and define the Devil You Know sound.Â? Jones agrees: Â?He went from producer to unsung member to friend.Â?
Â?ItÂ?s a different style of music for me,Â? says Jones of Devil You Know. Â?ItÂ?s heavy as anything any of us are known for but I get to do some different things people wonÂ?t expect. IÂ?ve been singing almost all my life. Being around good songwriters and musicians in my former bands really helped mold me into who I am now.Â?
Devil You KnowÂ?s Nuclear Blast Entertainment debut is currently slated for an early 2014 release with international touring plans and a full touring lineup to be announced shortly.
Quote:Groovy, melodic and raging - get your hands on this album
Devil You Know may be a new band to the scene, but they have wasted absolutely no time in delivering the message that they mean business with their debut albumÂ?s title, The Beauty of Destruction, making perfect sense. Right from the anthemic first track, Â?A New BeginningÂ?, Devil You Know makes their intentions clear. ItÂ?s a crowd song, itÂ?s a song to go crazy to, and the musicianship on display is fantastic. The riffs induce head banging, drums are pounding and the growls are rage filled; it makes you feel like you are walking into one hell of battle. Throughout the album there are parts which are meant for the crowd to chant and scream along and go completely crazy.
The band features Howard Jones (ex Killswitch Engage), guitars by Francesco Artusato (All Shall Perish) and Roy Lev-Ari, drums by John Sankey (ex Divine Heresy, Devolved) and bass by Ryan Wombacher (Bleeding Through). Each member definitely brings their own influences to the table. The fiery riffs of ASP, the growls and melodic vocals of KsE and the hard hitting drums of the various bands Sankey has been involved in, the album packs a powerful punch from start to finish, with a good measure of variety to keep things interesting. The lyrics are deep as well, and it is evident that most of it is personal from Howard Jones.
Take the track Â?Embracing the TortureÂ?. The growls are brilliant in this one, and then comes the incredible melody which only Howard Jones can pull off with perfection. ItÂ?s extremely catchy and groovy with a ripper solo to top things off. This magic is repeated on Â?Seven Years AloneÂ?, and probably the heaviest track, and my pick of the tracks on the album, Â?A Mind InsaneÂ?. Then there are tracks like Â?For the Dead and BrokenÂ? and Â?ItÂ?s OverÂ? which is much slower, softer, with mainly clean vocals to lead the song. There are great shifts in pace in the album, and it definitely makes you want more of both. Thankfully, you do get a great fix of both of these approached on this album.
The Beauty of Destruction ends on a great note as well with the track Â?As Bright as the DarknessÂ?, which features a fairly atmospheric, almost evil, acoustic-oriented ending. They donÂ?t go out with a bang as such, but this ending is good enough for you to go - I need to listen to this again! Honestly, thereÂ?s not much to complain about with this album. While the songs may not be groundbreaking or Â?newÂ? as such, it is way better than the other metalcore releases coming out these days. It is a supergroup of sorts, and they definitely havenÂ?t disappointed. Groovy, melodic, and raging - get your hands on this album.
