Epica - Unchain Utopia (Single) (2014)
Ten years. Five studio albums. Two official live recordings. A movie score. Performances for hundreds of thousands of fans throughout Europe, North America, South & Central America, Asia, and Australia.
For the past decade, Epica has redefined symphonic metal again and again and again. Little wonder that they?ve become one of Holland?s most revered musical exports, and one of the most respected bands in all of modern metal music.
Epica was originally formed in 2002 by guitarist Mark Jansen, who was already known for his work with After Forever. After choosing to go by the name of Epica (a place in the universe where the answers to the questions of life can be found) and attracting the then-unknown vocalist Simone Simons, the band - rounded out by guitarist Ad Sluijter, drummer Jeroen Simons, bassist Yves Huts, and keyboardist Coen Janssen ? recorded their 2003 full-length debut, The Phantom Agony. Defined by its incredible scope, startling beauty, and undeniable power, The Phantom Agony instantly announced Epica as a force to be reckoned with in the world of melodic metal. The album also began the band?s collaboration with producer Sascha Paeth (Avantasia, Kamelot and Edguy), who has worked with the band on all of their albums since.
Epica parted with Jeroen Simons following the release of their acclaimed sophomore effort, Consign to Oblivion, and were joined by new drummer Ariën van Weesenbeek (God Dethroned) for their 2007 Nuclear Blast debut, The Divine Conspiracy. Tackling heady issues regarding religion, science, and nature, The Divine Conspiracy was also Epica?s first concept album, and proved that not only could the band rock, but that they had something on their minds, too.
2009?s Design Your Universe marked the debut of new guitarist Isaac Delahaye, formerly Ariën?s bandmate in God Dethroned. Although Design Your Universe focused lyrically on the power of thought and imagination instead of the power of religion, its message was ultimately the same: ?New breakthroughs in quantum physics prove that we are all connected to each other on subatomic level,? explained Mark Jansen. ?It changes everything for us. Our whole worldview collapses once you accept these facts and integrate them in your life.?
2012?s Requiem for the Indifferent ? the band?s final album with bassist Yves Huts ? was the band?s most successful yet, breaking into the top 10 of the charts in the band?s native Holland, the top 40 in Germany, France, Austria, Switzerland, Portugal, Finland and Belgium, the top 50 in Australia, the Czech Republic and Sweden, and the top 100 in the U.S. and the U.K. The band?s world tours in support of the album included their first-ever shows in Asia and Australia.
On March 23rd, 2013, Epica commemorated their tenth anniversary by doing what they do best: putting on a massive, mind-blowing show that their fans will never forget. Taking place at Klokgebouw (Bell Building) in Eindhoven, the Netherlands, and attended by thousands of fans from more than fifty countries around the world ? in addition to yet another couple of thousand people who streamed the show live at home! ? that sold-out performance has already become legendary.
Accompanied by the seventy piece Extended Reményi Ede Chamber Orchestra and The Miskolc National Theatre Choir, the evening saw these titans of symphonic metal celebrate their entire body of work. Further ensuring that this was truly a night to remember, the concert also saw the live debut of the previously-unreleased ?Retrospect? and the Requiem never before performed ?Twin Flames?, covers of Vivaldi, Pergolesi, and John Williams, two guest collaborations with the venerable Floor Jansen (Nightwish, ReVamp), and a very special performance of their breakthrough single, ?Quietus?, with founding members Ad Sluijter, Jeroen Simons, and Yves Huts.
In celebration of their first decade the band will release the Retrospect 2-DVD, 2-Blu-Ray and 3-CD on 8th November by Nuclear Blast Records. Retrospect was filmed with 10 high-definition cameras and is edited, mixed and mastered by Jochem Jacobs (Textures) at Split Second Sounds.
Retrospect captures this once-in-a-lifetime event, up close and personal, in all of its bombast and glory. Epica have never sounded so deserving of their name.
