Decapitated Christ - Arcane Impurity Ceremonies (2014)
Decapitated Christ was formed back in September 2005 by founding members BlastHagel (drums), Ghorth (guitars) and Lutt (bass & vocals) with the only aim to resurrect the spirit of the True Old School Metal of the early 90Â?s, and as a revolt against trendy, money-focused, so called Â?newÂ? and Â?modernÂ? metal.
Since the beginning, the music of Decapitated Christ had a definitive Old School vibe to it, having its main influences in such legendary bands as Possessed, early Sodom, Kreator, Destruction, Sepultura, Slayer, the Swedish masters Carnage, Nihilist, Merciless, Desultory, Grave up to the Death Metal classics Morbid Angel, Obituary, Deicide, Immolation, Suffocation & Cannibal Corpse, among many more. Decapitated Christ was also trying to find its connection with extreme contemporary bands, also with that unique Â?old schoolÂ? vibe such as the masters Impiety, Bloodbath, Severed Savior, Zyklon, etcÂ?
It was quite clear since the beginning that Decapitated Christ should be a band without any pretention and/or pretentiousness other than delivering extreme metal the True Old School way, as it should be. This band isnÂ?t about speed-for-the-sake-of-speed, noise-for-the-sake-of-noise, nor is it trying to be the most fast, extreme, underground, grind, porn-gore fucking shit or whatever, but to deliver honest and straight from the depths of our putrid souls fucking METAL as it should have always been.
During 2006, Decapitated Christ was on hold due some personal reasons, and later that year our brother Lutt quit the band. Struggling through tough and hard times, BlastHagel and Ghorth kept the flame alive, waiting for the day of the bandÂ?s rise.
2008 saw the birth of the resurrected Decapitated Christ. First of all with the stepping in of Intestinal Shouter Paingrinder with its unique trademark style growls, and later on with Battledemon Cesar Cold on the Earthquake Bass.
Having its most creative time ever, the band rehearsed full machine ahead in order to prepare for the recording of their first cd Â?Antikristian Extreme DekapitationÂ?, a call to arms to all those True Old Metal Demons waiting for The Golden Age to rise again. The only intention behind this record is to shake the ground beneath all those trend-metal, hobby bands and drown them on the seas of mediocrity.
Quote:ItÂ?s funny that the cover art to this one immediately reminded me of ImpietyÂ?s Â?Skullfucking ArmageddonÂ?, as Decapitated Christ are self-confessed fans of those Singaporean nuts. Over the course of three albums, this Spanish five-piece has (apparently) made it its purpose to be an affront to so-called modern metal, trends and poseurs. Drawing on all manner of great Â? mainly old Â? thrash/death/black metal influences, it is now time for Â?Arcane Impurity CeremoniesÂ? to cement this bandÂ?s own position within the underground unlight.
Intro, Â?And the Carnage BeginsÂ?, is definitely one of the better ones IÂ?ve heard lately, with its rich, hypnotic riffs, organic drum sound and subtle background keyboard setting the stage nicely. Better still is when Â?The One Who MarchesÂ?Â? blasts off like the (un)godly Angelcorpse. Admittedly it doesnÂ?t continue in this furious vein Â? instead shifting into more spidery death metal realms Â? but if thereÂ?s a way of arousing this listenerÂ?s interest, itÂ?s evoking the spirit of HelmkampÂ?s legend. Vocally, DC reminds of so many previous Spanish/South American bands with lyrics barked gutturally over morbid, thrashing riffs. Particularly great in the opener is the solo section, in which those cool riffs just continue going about their business while leads ooze satisfyingly out. Â?Human-Eating Herd of the DamnedÂ?(!) follows in more measured fashion, like descending black fog; a style that also pervades numerous subsequent tracks. On which note, Â?HellÂ?s EverythingÂ?, even gets me thinking of the mighty Immolation with its regular chopping and changing.
For much of the album, the bandÂ?s prowling, predatory riffing echoes a legendary band that I frustratingly canÂ?t put a name to. In Â?When War Brings Glory (Cenotaph)Â? however, there is absolutely no room for confusion. If the title doesnÂ?t give it away then perhaps the opening/closing imitation of Â?The KillchainÂ? or the roar of Â?In battle there is no law!Â? will. Yes, thatÂ?s right: an ode to Bolt Thrower. Instead of pursuing the artillery grind route of Â?The KillchainÂ?, the majority of this tribute goes on a Â?Â?for VictoryÂ?-styled path, alternating between blasts of mourning/reverberating mechanical death metal. Slightly at odds with the rest of the material, this track certainly achieves what it set out to do. Â?HexenhammerÂ? reverts to the formula of shifting, swaggering darkness that characterises DCÂ?s own style. Aside from a slightly odd Â?Ooh!Â? at one point, there are once again some adept combinations of guitar- and drum-work. In fact, the best aspect to this entire disc is the confidence-bordering-on-arrogance that permeates those riffs.
One aspect IÂ?m actually not that keen on is the bandÂ?s frequent use of film samples Â? particularly that shit reworking of dialogue from (the remake of?) Â?Dawn of the DeadÂ?. In DCÂ?s case, the music does the talking on its own Â? as the indecipherably-titled closing track proves, with little variations and nuances thrown in to ensure that you are trapped within the albumÂ?s black tentacles until its end.
While overall itÂ?s hard to say that Â?Arcane Impurity CeremoniesÂ? really distinguishes itself from the hosts of quality albums out there, or has enough clout to make your jaw fall to the ground, it is still a fine example of pure death metal.
