Re-Armed - Rottendam (2014)
Re-Armed have been up since 2001, when five guys in Kerava, Finland decided to start playing music similar to so-called "Göteborg metal". Their musical style has evolved along with many demo tapes and critically acclaimed debut album "Worldwide Hypnotize".
Becoming a style that is combination of technical, grooving death metal with thrash and grind influences, spiced up with melodic lines. During the years some line-up changes have occurred the band but they have still managed to grow musically, as well as individuals. Be sure to keep your ears and eyes wide open when these Finns roll to your country! New album "Rottendam" will be released 10th of January 2014 and YOUR town will be next one that they will conquer!
"Modern Death Metal from Finland"
RE-ARMED SINCE 2001.
Quote:Despite only being two albums into their career Finnish death metallers Re-Armed have a fair amount of musical experience under their belts. Formed in 2001 and recording six demos before releasing their debut album Worldwide Hypnotize, they're a band who have honed their craft well over these years and it shows on their recently released second album Rottendam. What we're presented with is just short of half an hour of good solid thrashy death metal, ferocious, technical, melodic in places but without compromising on aggression.
After a brief intro the title track gets down to business, offering a vicious dose of death metal brutality, coming at you from a number of different angles with some decent riffs and the tempo moving between mid and fast paced. It's a solid opener and does a good job of laying the foundations for what's to come. Things get better however, it's on the third track, Wracked, where we really see what the band can do, this one tears along at light speed with riff upon frenzied riff thrown at you, the playing is incredibly tight yet hits like a clenched fist to the gut and what's clear is that, while Re-Armed may not be offering anything massively original they are pretty damn good at what they do. They draw upon the strong points of technical and melodic death metal and showcase considerable musical skill while managing to wrap it all up in a tight razor sharp package that hits home in the way that music of this nature should. The whole album is savage, menacing and uncompromising, the band are at their most impressive when going full speed but the pace does occasionally drop into some slower parts, creating an ominous foreboding atmosphere which only adds to the overall effect. Each song has plenty of variety within it too, most clock in around the three or four minute mark but there's a hell of a lot packed into those minutes, no song outstays its welcome and after the album is finished you're left wanting more. I'd say it's hard to pick standout tracks here as the overall quality is consistently excellent, Wracked would be a personal favourite for me but they're all good in my opinion, no wasted motion here and no filler.
On the whole then we have something that will satisfy the tastes of anyone who gets an adrenaline rush from vicious technical death metal. These guys are extremely competent musicians with a degree of experience that shows through in what they do, and draw influence from the melodic death metal / Gothenburg sound to a certain extent but without sounding too clean cut or watering down the intensity. It's a damn fine album, one of the better examples of its kind, it certainly delivers what it sets out to and anyone wanting a short sharp hit to the system can do far worse than giving Rottendam a listen.
