Pretty Maids - Louder Than Ever (2014)
Pretty Maids are a Danish hard rock/heavy metal band from Horsens, Denmark. Formed in 1981 by Ronnie Atkins and Ken Hammer, their sound and music can be described as classic guitar-laden heavy rock with a strong emphasis on melodic elements like vocals and keyboards.
Over the years, Pretty Maids have sold hundreds of thousands of records, but have never broken through in a major way, except in Japan during the 1990s. They have supported well known bands as Black Sabbath, Whitesnake, Deep Purple, Alice Cooper, and Saxon, and were also featured at the 1987 German version of Monsters of Rock, where Metallica headlined along with Deep Purple.
After a prolonged international touring hiatus before the release of the 2006 Wake Up To The Real World album, the band have every year since been touring their primary markets of Denmark, Sweden, Germany, and Spain.
PRETTY MAIDS' "Louder Than Ever" ? a collection of new songs and re-recorded tracks from past albums ? on March 21 in Europe and March 25 in North America.
After celebrating thier 30th anniversary as a band and the release of their latest monumental album, "Motherland", the Danish melodic hard rockers are serving the fans with an album which includes eight re-recorded classic songs from the 1995-2006 era, plus four brand new songs specially written for this record and a special bonus DVD including archive footage from the '80s, brand new interviews and plenty of cool material for the fans!
"There were two main reasons for us to do this album," explains singer Ronnie Atkins. "First of all, we wanted to keep the ball in spin and release some kind of an 'in between' album before the next 'real' studio album. Then we were curious to hear how some of the older songs would sound like with the band lineup we have today and in the hands of our current producer, Jacob Hansen. The original idea was actually to do a mix of both re-recorded, re-mixed, covers and new songs, but in the end decided to cut it down to what it is. We deliberately chose not to re-record some of the Eighties and early Nineties material, since it's some kind of 'sacred,' both to ourselves as well as the fans."
The release of "Louder Than Ever" will be followed up by a three-to-four-week tour in Europe in May 2014. In addition, the band will appear at several festivals during the summer.
?Deranged?, one of the newer tracks, is filled with energy and passion within the riffs, displaying the greatness of the band?s catchy sounds and charm, wonderful solo and a fine synergy between the guitar riffs and the overflowing keyboards. ?Nuclear Boomerang?, another fresh one, continues the massiveness of the band?s wall of sound, powerful Heavy Metal with a fine measure of tunefulness. ?Playing God?, an earlier classic, emerged SAXON or IRON MAIDEN in my thought pattern, yet it is also easy to comprehend PRETTY MAIDS? landmark on it, amazing guitar solo had me with Goosebumps and the touchy keys made this one my favourite track on the album. ?Virtual Brutality?, a modern cracker, let?s out an amazing chorus with several HELLOWEEN influences and even oriental echoes that made this new version heavier. Ronnie Atkins has a perfect voice, strong, clear yet also gentle in the nick of time. His voice is surreal, and larger than life on ?With These Eyes?, simply penetrating, the melodic chorus with keyboards and the violins left me no choice but to enjoy this tune. ?Wake Up to the Real World? shared several DOKKEN and GOTTHARD occurrences, pretty good. The new ?Tortured Spirit? slammed with fury in its new clothes while the new commercial radio hit ballad ?My Soul to Take? and the renewed kick-ass of ?He Who Never Lived? enhanced the magic of the band?s grandeur.
